Hello All!
Thank you for your continued posts! We delight in reading them. As you know, this past weekend we went to the Highland Games! What a blast that was....and we saw HRH the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and HRH Prince Charles! We were within 20 feet of them all.....was pretty cool. We'll be making a more complete post very soon with pictures, so just bear with us!
Rob's school is going well, although he hates the lectures. Unlike my program at Brock, Rob's lectures are with at least 200 other students (not small groups of 30) and this makes the lectures very formal and very dry. It's too bad, because teacher's college should really be about personalizing the information...not just mass marketing it!
But he is enjoying the practical part of it....last week he learned about how to teach gymnastics:) Although all of those rolls and tumbles he had to do (because before we can teach we have to do!) made his head pretty sore. The concussion that he received (not like a present:) in February is still causing him some problems and so he has decided to not play rugby at the moment. The most important thing is that he gets healthy....then rugby can come next....he'll try again in a few months time. But for now, he's taken up swimming, which he seems to enjoy.
As for me, I'm still at my job! As for the teaching market, that is completely closed to me now, as I was informed by the General Teaching Council (the governing body for teachers) that I do not meet the qualifications for either a primary or intermediate school teacher (as my qualifications are junior/intermediate). Apparently the Scottish system does not have an age bracket entitled junior/intermediate. I am not that upset about it though. Although it would have been nice to teach, it is also nice to do something other than the school I have been doing for the past million years. However, as Gina suggested, I will try to keep my hand in the system for resume purposes (and experience too!).
I'll do my best to get on the internet tonight and post the Highland Games blog. Also, for those of you that don't know, Rob and I have just signed up for SKYPE, and we have a webcam....it is free for us to talk to any SKYPE users (and free for them too!) and you can see us via webcam. Kirsten and I chatted on it a couple of days ago. If you sign up for SKYPE (that's free too!) and then search for rob.and.sarah.ashwood, you'll find us, then add us as contacts, and you'll be able to call us over the internet. The best time to catch us is between 7-10pm (our time) so 2-5 (your time). If you can't make it on till later, just email us and we'll try to set up a time to be on the net. No problemo! It really is great to chat face to face. Dad I've tried you a couple of times but you never seem to be there....I'll try you again soon!
Lots of love,
Sarah

Hi Sweetheart... glad to see you guys had a great weekend. As you can tell, I don't often get to this blog until later in the day. I have a webcam around here too (although on some days you wouldn't want to see me!) and am familar with skype. I can't use it on the work computer but can on the home one so I'll try to set it up there. I did get one call on the machine from you (imagine my surprise!) but we were in NY at Darien Lake. Now that we're home again and the kids are back to school, it'll be a bit more regular around here. I'm usually in the city on Tues/Thurs and try to work from home the rest of the time.
I'm sure you'll find something that interests you more... you might want to mention to your employers that you feel under-utilized and are looking for more. That's often the very thing that changes their opinion of the staff (we in the business community love self-directed, motivated folks). It's an opportunity to shine! (And if they don't listen to you and get you something more challenging (in addition to your current role) then go look for something else. There are a lot of folks that got to the top by starting in the mail room...
20 feet away from HRH huh? Pretty amazing when you think about it. I doubt you'd get that close to Bush. Have you guys tried any Haggis yet? Not even sure that I'D try it...
Everyone is fine here. Rachel reads your blog and has enjoyed your pictures... some day I'll give her an ID so she can write you. Shawn's into some big novel now and barely lifts his head out of it for anything... he's always sneaking it to the dinner table, to bed, to school... he's a read-a-holic. I guess he came by that naturally!
Jen's been teaching the two of them piano... they are both quite good and can read music and play with BOTH hands! :-) Shawn is considerably better (he's had more time at it) and its amazing to me what he can play. She just has a challenge slowing him down. Rachel is all about singing with the music... she'd dance with it if she could!
Any way, everyone is fine here and we're all thinking about you guys. Take care.
Love Dad
Great picture of the highlands... looks pretty forbidding! As you know, I'm not much of a cook... I'll leave that to Gina and Mom (and Jen of course) but here are a few of my staple ones:
SPAGHETTI VONGOLE(Spaghetti with white clam sauce)
- spaghetti (if you can't make that then I can't help you!)
- in a separate frying pan a dollup of olive oil and butter and then fry up until golden brown (but don't burn it!)... add in some parsley and spices to taste, and then the juices from a can of baby clam... simmer.
- when the pasta is ready while you are draining it, dump the clams into the oil/juice for about 1 min (just enough to heat them as they are already cooked)
- enjoy
NY BUTTERMILK PANCAKES
- Combine in large bowl, 3/4 cup flour, 3/4 cup whole wheat flour, 1 tsp each of baking powder and baking soda, 1-1/2 tbsp sugar
- whisk in medium bowl, 2 egg whites, 1-1/2 cup buttermilk, 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese and 1/2 tsp vanilla
- add buttermilk mixture to flour mixture and stir just until dry ingredients are moistened
- add in 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
- make pancakes
We like a special bananna cream topping in addition to maple syrup)
- 1/2 cup low fat sour cream or yogurt
- 1 large bananna mashed up
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- add cinnamon to taste
DAD'S SPECIAL PASTA
- one box kd pasta lightly cooked in salted water
- dump in the cheese powder
- add butter and stir til smooth
- add a splash of milk
- Enjoy :-D
