Rob has just finished his second placement at Fettes College
and
I finally got a tour! I've attached some of the pictures below, so you can have a look. Fettes was built in the mid-1800s, although I think it looks much older than that. The building is somewhat gothic, and looks like it came straight out of Harry Potter:), although it's much smaller than I imagine Hogwarts would be. I'm such a nerd, I know:) The college has gargoyles up on the roof, and the teacher's warned Rob when he started to beware of them, as they sometimes fall off! You think with the students paying a small fortune to attend the school they could take care of that small detail.
and The main building, as you can see, is abs
olutely stunning. In the upper
most peaks, the girls reside in their dorms. You can enter the building through huge, heavy wooden doors with iron knockers and handles. Inside, are many classrooms, which are fairly small (as the class sizes are anywhere from 8-10 pupils), have old wooden desks and chairs, and a fire place in each one! In each wing of the building, there are winding staircases with iron railings and steep steps going up the towers to the girls dorms. We couldn't go up there, but I would have loved to!
Entrance through
the front doors t
akes you into a grand gallery with a huge staircase leading to the 'first' floor, at the top of which is my favourite room in the whole building- the secret library! It's a beautiful room, each wall filled with books from floor to ceiling, each of which are easily ancient! A big fireplace takes up one wall, and beautiful windows on the one side.
This room is usually used for teacher conferences, and sometimes for student debates. I wish I could have stayed longer. I told Rob, someday, you can build me a room like this:)
Across from the 'secret library' is the school chapel, with very old wooden pews, and stunning stained glass windows. The students attend chapel every day in the morning. Looking around I just couldn't imagine going to a school like this!
Rob really enjoyed his placement, although he was teaching mostly primary school children in the gym, and coaching in the afternoon. After we come home from Canada, he's due to start his third and final placement at Drummond High School, which is nothing like Fettes! I'm sure he'll have a great time there too!
I've included another picture here at the bottom, which is not related to Fettes at all,
but I thought was interesting. This is a picture of the plots of land that are rented by Edinburgh residents for gardening. Most of the residents here live in flats with no gardens, and so the city has set aside tiny plots of land in certain areas so that the residents can rent them for a fairly minimal monthly fee, and garden/grow vegetables. Each plot has a little gardening shed on it, and they are always busy on the weekends. All in all, they are an eyesore...but I can see the advantages too. Makes us really appreciate the amount of space we have at home!
Until next time!
Rob and Sarah
